The Secret to Win Amazon ‘Buy Box’

By understanding what Amazon desires, sellers can exponentially increase their chances to win the coveted ‘Buy Box’.

‘How do I win the Buy Box on Amazon?’ It is a question we get asked by our Amazon Sellers all the time.

We can tell you that you can’t pay to win the ‘Buy Box’, chatting up your Amazon representative will accomplish nothing to achieve a Buy Box win, and there is no one ‘thing’ that will help you to win the coveted Buy Box.


There are 4 minimum requirements you, the Amazon seller must meet before you can be in the running for the ‘Buy Box’ for your product(s).

  1. Professional Seller

Must have a professional sellers Amazon account. A basic account sometimes called an individual sellers account (aka Free account) is not eligible.

  1. Product Availability

You must have inventory of your product(s) in stock and ready to sell.

  1. New Products

Your product(s) must be new.  If you are selling used products, they can be sold via the ‘Buy Used Box’.

  1. Account Status

You will need to ensure you are ‘Buy Box’ eligible for your product(s). This can be checked in your Amazon sellers central account for each country, e.g. .com,.ca , UK, FR, DE, etc.Secret to Winning the ‘Buy Box’

At E-Commerce Direct, our experience, research and testing have shown us there are multiple elements that will help you to reach the ‘Buy Box’ for your product(s).

The top 3 are as follows:

  1. Total Price Plus Shipping – The lower your sales price, the better chance you have to win the ‘Buy Box’. This is also called the ‘Landed Price’.
  2. Shipping time – No more than 2 days, although Amazon stats that less than 14 days is acceptable.
  3. FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) – FBA by far has demonstrated a much higher win rate for the ‘Buy Box’, even though Amazon states that seller fulfilled prime or FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant) is acceptable.

There are 10 other areas that we have found that further impact who is awarded the ‘Buy Box’.

  1. On-time delivery – Up to 12 hours
  2. Feedback Score – Higher better and more relevant feedback is more valuable
  3. Order Defect Rate – Simply put, none
  4. Late Shipment Rate – Simply put, none
  5. Valid tracking rate – 100%
  6. Customer response time – ASAP and 100% Responses
  7. Feedback count – More the merrier!
  8. Cancellation rate – Simply put, none
  9. Refund rate – Lower is best
  10. Inventory (stock) – Simply put, don’t run out

Although this list is not exhaustive, these elements within your Amazon seller central account are manageable. The better you perform, your ability to win the ‘Buy Box’ grows exponentially.
